I read the currency account documentation again and I
think now I know how it works. We really need a
more intuitive user interface for this ...

I don't think you are using the currency account correctly. Presuming
the account security is EUR and the currency is DEM, the 'bought' and
'sold' fields are always in EUR, and the value and balance is always
in DEM, otherwise vice versa.
