daemon by hand, and I had to wait for assistance to try this, but when I
did, the run application box just came up for a second and disappeared,

You can try to build at-spi with "--enable-xevie=no" to disable XEVIE.
And make sure at-spi-registryd locate in the right directory (depends on
your drstro) by "--libexecdir="
