This got fixed upstream and shouldn't happen. This should really be
considered as a system daemon.

Why is the user having to start brltty for himself? This seems like a fairly
awkward thing for a user who needs braille to have to do on his own, i.e.
before he can actua
I do know the prolific usb cable can be a bit flaky with the Mac so
may have to get a keyspan.
After looking at your post further though, you are talking about the
x86 cd; I don't have a problem with brltty on the x86 cd, at least
for Dapper Drake; it's the ppc version where there's a problem

It would be nice not to have to use root to start brltty. I filed an
Ubuntu bug about it a few days ago
On the latest Ubuntu Edgy on my x86 laptop, I get BrlTTY 3.7.2 to work
with my Baum Vario 40 display using the following command as root:
brltty -d/dev/ttyUSB0
I noticed in the past that the brand of USB<->Serial converter made a
difference. The one I use is the Keyspan USA-19HS (www.keyspan.com
I dont know about a null modem adaptor; is this a difference between
the old braillelites and the braillelite 2000? Wih my braillelite,
all I have to do is use the serial cable that came with my
braillelite and add on the usb-to-serial adaptor.

Perhaps. Then again, something goofy may be going on with my Braille
Lite and/or the cable I'm using with it. You see, I also happen
to have an Alva Braille Terminal at my disposal. I just verified tha

It may, then, be a bug in the Linux support for USB->Serial adapters. I don't
have one of those so I can't experiment.
Brltty does set the b
Hi Dave, group.

It's not. In both cases it's on Ubuntu Edgy: Live CD on the iMac;
installed copy on one of my PCs.
Take care.

Hi Cheryl. For the PPC live CD, I *believe* you want "live nofb".
As for how you can know for sure you're there: What I noticed on my
iMac is that the CD spins quite a bit and then stops. The point at
which it stops and remains quiet is the point at which you are at the
boot prompt.
Yes
Dave Mielke thinks my problem with question marks on the braille
display when I try to start brltty using my usb-to-serial cable with
the powerpc live cd may be one that has been resolved in the latest
repository version of brltty. But he suggested that instead of trying
to modify the iso i
