are very difficult when there are a large number of people in one room

I also prefer a screen reader to self voicing. Whenever possible I will
choose braille over speech.

Personally I preffer the screen reader approach over self voicing apps. Using
the screen reader lets me do things like change
rate, voice, and most important ignore things when I become familiar with the
app. YOu can't do this with most self voicing apps
