Maybe a step by step. I've just tried it again and it works with a
minimum of mousing (I'm using gimp 2.6.4).
1. Add alpha channel to initial layer.
2. Add new black layer and move it underneath. (After this step make

Placing the top layer in divide mode is also very useful. Also try

If convenient, please advise me of the bug number on this so that I can
track it. Thank you very much.
Related to the "bug", I hope you also noted the problem that there is no

Hi saulgoode,
Thanks for your input, but I am afraid that you have completely
misunderstood the intent of my question.
- I want the visible "objects" (other than the background color)
currently in the image to remain exactly the same size.
- I want to increase the size of the canvas and fill the

subject -- problem with this dialog box:
The 'link' symbol at the top, between the two pixel sizes, reverts every
single time to "linked" status. It seems that it has to be "unlinked"
every time if you wish to change only one of t

Thanks Saul. (Leaving text below in case this s/b the basis for a
bugreport ...)
a) I can drag and drop in the Layers dialog - but never see the '+'-sign
in the cursor.
b) In your video (I stepped through it frame by frame so I'm pretty sure
I have this correct) as soon as you grabbed the layer
