Agreed, hiring people to mentor a project isn't an issue. Same as people
being hired to contribute to a project.
I just want to remind him/her, hiring is hiring, it is better to be clear
about the status.

Even if a mentor was involved in some commercial way I don't see that as an
issue if it was disclosed. Having a mentor that's involved in the project
may mean that they stay around for longer and are more involved. The only
issue I see if that relationship ended the project may loose a mentor,
