X server you can run xcompmgr and make anything transparent. That's
what I do on displays that will do it - I'm very fond of xclock's wire
frame appearance:-)

I'm running F7 with a text mode login, starting X later. I start my own
agent and also don't run gnome or kde (well, their desktop stuff - I use
some gnome and kde apps).

Of course, that means you will need to have a complete working session in
it since it pre-empts the system default (and if you break the .xsession
script you will need to escape back to your text console to fix it -
urr, there may be a "failsafe" login mode - I normally do a text login
and start X from there).

Life is like a sandwich, the more you

input, eg at the shell, run:
/home/chris/bin/fvwm-xdg-menu.py -m Gnome -s 16 -f applications
and so forth.

Xinerama, because Twinview presents the two monitors as a single one to
the X server...

you might want. Functions and key bindings in particular can be hard to
learn without examples, but there are a fair number of examples.
