If you have your own .xinitrc, does this still run?
If you do a text mode login and start your own agent, does their agent
also start?

I'm running F7 with a text mode login, starting X later. I start my own
agent and also don't run gnome or kde (well, their desktop stuff - I use
some gnome and kde apps).

Windows is really user friendly - it doesn't crash on its own, it first
opens a dialog box, saying it will crash and you have to click OK :-)
