thank you all for your hints.
root-tail works out of the box, but for flexibility and better formatting
of the output, I'll give the label-in-FvwmButton-approach a shot. Looks
pretty easy going.

Not sure what you mean by "background mode", on the root window ? I guess
it could be obtained with some Style options.
