Instead of changing your .bashrc, you can just execute the following lines when
you want to switch versions (or place them into a bash script that you load
with "source your_script").
export FREESURFER_HOME=/path/to/your/desired/freesurfer/directory
source $FREESURFER_HOME/SetUpFreeS

You can. But you will to name them different and change the .bahsrc file
every time you use one or the other.

what is the size of the rawavg.mgz file? Can you run mri_info on it? How
did you create the 001.mgz? Rerunning recon-all won't help if the 001.mgz
is already corrupted - you will need to regenerate it. That fact that we
can't even read slice 0 suggests there is something badly wrong
