You should be able to move from 9.1-RELEASE to 9-STABLE with freebsd-update :)

card order, like this for example:

e1000 vmbr1 EA:5F:04:94:A4:21

Now this means I'll have the following mappings in FreeBSD 7.2:
vmbr1 -> e
