All you are missing is the fact FreeBSD cannot handle
two NICs the same subnet. OpenBSD does, NetBSD does and Linux does.

Are there other things worth looking for?
Right now I'm using in /etc/rc.conf the line
sshd_flags="-E /var/log/sshd_debug.log"
which is already quite verbose. Is there a better
option that emphasizes errors over normal traffic?

my observations of keyboard interaction vis ssh.
Input sometimes stop echoing for tens of seconds, then all goes through
after the pause. Maybe this really has little or nothing to do with the
network, it's just that all my interaction with the two machines is via
the network. Neither has had a console and keyboard since I got the Pi4.

3. If I statically link the driver in the kernel it disrupts my sound
card. This doesn't happen if I dynamically load the driver.
However, all of these are easily ignored or worked around in my

NIC and installed a new rl and problem was solved. I spent several
weeks testing different things. For the 5 or ten bucks for a new
