This section should likely just be axed. It was a Big Deal when FreeBSD 3.0
switched from a.out to elf, but FreeBSD has been an
27;t think ifconfig_IF_aliasN is depreated, though you can now use
ifconfig_IF_aliases as an alternate. Also, both ifconfig_IF_aliases
and ifconfig_IF_aliasN handle both IPv4 and IPv6. See this commit for more

I have always assumed it was short for geometry. One of the original
uses cases for GEOM was handling partition tables, and MBR in particular
is (sadly) quite tied to disk geometry since it still specifies boundaries
both as LBAs and as C/H/S tuples.

Correct, you have to set that variable in the environment. This appears to be
