With the patch from #30 the machine in question hasn't had any more hiccups. It
is behaving in a bug-compatible way with the way it was before the commit that

There's no size decreases. The sizes match what is in the initial probe
messages.
What's happening is that the disk is mis-partitioned like this:
Disk size: 143374650 sectors
sector 0: PMBR
sector 1-39
