I'll admit that I go into design view on occasion (now a days, I have to
launch FB just for that feature). There is something about visually seeing
what 5 pixels on the screen really represents, without having to launch a
debug build that may take a few moments to get going...

I expect that some day and hopefully it will be a sooner day that I will be
able to un-shackle myself from Design view. Right now , I don't have enough
of a command of what components are available and in what contexts , never
mind all of the various options, and layout.

That should be all you need. Keep in mind that some features of Flash
Builder are built around specific SDK versions. For example, design view,
will not work right with the new version.
I personally am using that method for compiling projects within IntelliJ
with no issues.

that was indeed the problem. I'm installing Apache Flex at the moment. My
main reason is to test whether my apps will work with it without issue. So
I will have to point IDEA and FB to use the apache sdk.
