it was entered for payment, amount, check date, record number for each of the
20+ columns.
In another sheet, I want to sum the amount entered and the amount paid by

Meaning, row 2 on sheet 1 ties to row 2

VBA. I am told to type only the first few characters to get the name

The code line you've given looks ok. Perhaps you should post a copy of the
whole macro, and tell us what "I can't make it work" actually means.
The best thing would be to attach a copy of your workbook, or a sample at least.
