I guess that will not change anything. Before you go retrieve your
messages next time, you could check beforehand by logging into your
providers Web interface.

somebody will be bitten
by a bad migration and currently has no way to manually redo the
migration.

The password reminder eventually arrived, with a password I'd never seen
before. I surmise that the password I had set was flushed, along with
other config details, and so the system chose one for me --- as if I'd
left it blank originally.

I still have the original mail and the original attachment to it,
