I had a similar problem when I upgraded from an old version (3.6?)
to a newer version(3.10?) during a major OS upgrade.
I had an un-saved custom view on my Inbox. Selecting the Inbox folder
and then setting View > Current View > Messages resolved my problem.

empty and yes, also my dropdown shows 'All Messages', these have been
the first settings I looked for after I realized the problem.
