I had a similar problem when I upgraded from an old version (3.6?)
to a newer version(3.10?) during a major OS upgrade.
I had an un-saved custom view on my Inbox. Selecting the Inbox folder
and then setting View > Current View > Messages resolved my problem.
I now remember to save custom views if I create them.
Hope this helps.
