First off, yes the calendars are all 'on this computer'
secondly, I tried running the evolution-data-server (it was actually in
usr/lib/evolution/evolution-data-server-2.24)
however when i tried to run it i just got the following error:

Perhaps you should have a look at Conduit? Otherwise, using
sync-evolution with a server such as funambol may be a good option.

Because the Evolution version is heavily dependent on the version of
Gnome - i.e. Evo 2.24 comes with Gnome 2.24. Evo is after all a Gnome
application and so

Hi All,
I'd like to sync Evolution's calendar, contacts, task lists and notes
with 3 other computers, all on the same network. They all have access
to a mounted nfs share. I tried out multisync and configured the first
group as evolution and the second as file-sync (nfs share). But it
doesn't work

I assume you are talking about a composer. Those font formatting
functions are available only for HTML mails
