OK. I've got the ltsp-pnp server functioning in a virtualbox vm on our
school 14.04 host. It turns out that setting the nic in virtualbox to
promiscuous mode and allow all has smartened things up.
Also, I've installed xbuntu and xfce and now have a functioning client
environment.

Don't know if there's any relationship, but a common issue with 12.04 ltsp
(-pnp or not) is that the menu bar (not unity) doesn't show up sometimes.
Logging out and logging back in usually takes care of it, interestingly,
rebooting/logging back in doesn't.

We were using the Ubuntu Mate 14.04 release and it just wasn't working.
We have just grabbed the latest Ubuntu desktop 14.04 and run through the
ltsp-pnp install and have clients booting using a dhcp server on our
router.
Everything works including interent/brower... except the Uni
In ltsp-pnp there's no /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf file,
as dnsmasq is used instead of isc-dhcp-server.
The default lts.conf (sudo ltsp-config lts.conf) contains this line:
RM_SYSTEM_SERVICES="tty1 apache2 clamav-daemon clamav-freshclam dnsmasq
mysql nbd-server nfs-kernel-server php5-fpm shared-folders
