I found the source of the problem. It occurs when you install and use
nautilus-dropbox. If you uninstall/purge nautilus-dropbox, delete all
the config files in your home dir and reboot, the desktop returns to
normal.

Correct me if I am wrong, but com.canonical.UnityGreeter allows me to
change the login screen settings only. Since the change in lock screen
the users backdrop and not the greeter backdrop is always displayed when

The problem is not seen if the app instead calls:

The problem is not observed when the only connections to upstart are the
standard upstart bridges (since they use nih_dbus_connect()).

uh oh, looks like I'm experiencing the same issues. Can't confirm the

missing colors for me.

FWIW, I can no longer reproduce this behaviour. I've survived several
days of suspend/resume cycles while using an external display. Instead
I'm seeing the double lock behaviour (unity + gnome screensaver).

I'm starting to think that the difference between my laptop at home and
my work machine is not the graphics adapter, it's the fact that I
actively lock my desktop and generally do not on my laptop... the issue
