I switched to the Proprietary AMD/ATI driver and the X server locked up
after I unlocked the screen... at the point where it would have powered
off & back on with the Open Source driver. I have not been able to

Is the Firefox window blank in this case? Or is that an icon problem you
are reporting?
In latest version of Ubuntu 14.04 this bug not fixed!
I can't enable wireless networking after my laptop resumed from suspend.
p.s. suspend turning with some errors too:

For Deluge we use the stock add icon and have custom text of "Add
Torrent" but now it's just "Add", "Pause All" becomes "Pause" etc. so it
is an issue and it is breaking with the convention that you can specify
custom labels with stock icons in a GTK application.

without ever clicking the workspace launcher. You can click anywhere on
the screen immediately after Super+s and Expo will switch straight back
to the workspace nearest to the click, sometimes dragging windows along
with it unpredict

With system monitor running, I got a nasty surprise. The system locked up when
CPU1 hit 100%. This required a power down reboot after about 30 minutes of no
response. The screens (3) were still displaying but the mouse keyboard were
frozen.

No, unless you don't go back to previous gnome-screensaver version.
BTW if you've set to lock the screen by default when screensaver
starts, just running:
gdbus call --session --dest org.gnome
