A workaround is to use Empathy rather than Pidgin (which is now the
default anyway) and to not autohide the thingy on the left with the
icons in it. I then get an icon for each messaging app there, along with
a number of unread emails.
That does cost more screen than the top bar does, though, and
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

A black screen is indicative of an X server crash rather than a
Compiz/Unity crash (which will leave windows open and functional on the
desktop, but without decorations).
It is possible there is a bug in the current Intel driver for the X
server triggered by something in the control center module.
In saucy 13.10 when no application is active HUD still does not list "Suspend,
Shut down, turn on/off wifi", which were so useful in 13.04.
Instead it shows commands to Nautilus (like "Connect to server", "New window",
"Bookmarks" etc).
