in the include, does it insert the config code into the section that the
include was called from? for example, if I'm in the middle of the imap
section and decide to include the file, does it treat it like it is
inserted in that location?

The .log file doesn't seem to contain anything special and I couldn't
reproduce the crash with it. So the quickest way to get this fixed would
be if you could:
1) Compile Dovecot's lib-index/ without optimizations (easiest is to
remove -O2 from lib-index/Makefile, make clean, make, make install)

start|stop|restart is for many Linux distributions; on FreeBSD you would
