Have you tried to manually open them from OpenOffice?
1. Open Openoffice Writer.
2. Go to File -> Open
3. Select the filetype (doc, docx).
4. Go to the directory with your files, and open them.

First of all thanks to all those who voted for me as new chair and PMC
member. A special thank to Dennis for running as candidate, in my opinion
Dennis is at least as, if not more, qualified than I am and I hope that
will be acknowledged very fast.
