The problem persists in LO 4.1.0.0.beta1 in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit in a fairly modern hardware (i7, 8GB RAM). I don't see a significant improvement after disabling AA (In Tools > Options > View > Screen font antialiasing). Reducing the size of the box containing the text does improve a lot the speed

I can confirm this still exists in 12.04 64bit running LibreOffice 3.5.4.2. I'm running a Core i5-2500K with 8Gig RAM and an nVidia GT440. As a simple test, create a new doc, place a large "smiley" object, zoom in. Now scroll up / down with (and without) AA enabled to see the difference in speed.
