The problem persists in LO 4.1.0.0.beta1 in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit in a fairly modern hardware (i7, 8GB RAM).
I don't see a significant improvement after disabling AA (In Tools > Options > View > Screen font antialiasing). Reducing the size of the box containing the text does improve a lot the speed.
