@Robert: I saw that upstream turned down the proposal to unset LANGUAGE
for this purpose. Considering that the issue is kind of Ubuntu specific,
do you think that it should be done as an Ubuntu patch for now? Or is
any of the methods, which are discussed on the merge request document,
within reach?

Languages always shown with Engli
The design [1] is that they should show in the native language. That is
what I've seen on other systems too (e.g. Android). It makes sense to me
- if I only speak Mandarin then there's no reason why I would recognise
the english word for that.

This appears to be due to libc using the LANGUAGE environment variable
over the value set in setlocale ().

But do we want language names be displayed using the native language?
Does upstream do so?

Or maybe not... The language names are shown using the effective session
language, which has been the case for a long time AFAIK. Not sure that
using the native language would be an improvement.
