This bug appears with several variations on a theme on several sites. The most common workaround of adding nouveau.nofbaccel=1 to /etc/default/grub as a kernel command line didn't work for me. However nouveau.noaccel=1 Has resulted in a stable PC for the last 24 hours which is a 3 year record!

Public bug reported: Regular lockups under graphics load. Existed since 2013 under previous versions of Ubuntu. Tends to happen when page scrolling or moving quickly through a browser page. Graphics load related? Several previous bugs of a similar nature either considered invalid or abandone
