Using GNOME in the guest isn't removing it from the equation, it's only
changing the equation.
Actually this could equally be a problem with virt-manager. What happens

Sorry - not a total noob here, but enough to embarrass myself... I had
to boot with "nomodeset" in order to get my machine to boot. That caused
the situation I described here. When I blacklisted the nouveau video
driver, I got my functionality back.
For those who know better how to fix these thing
I have a feeling you are right that it may not be gnome-control-center
doing this as setting the default value of show-banners in
/usr/share/glib2.0/schemas to false ends up being ignored at login.
It is unclear to me what the desired behaviour is from those

I agree. I don't see this as an upstream issue because I have tried it
on other distros - they worked as expected. USB hotplugging updates the
audio device. However, a reboot simply restores whatever was last in
use. For some reason, only on Ubuntu, it treats a reboot as plugging a
new USB device.
As mentioned in comment #37 the internal mic works well with Ubuntu
20.04 live mode. I haven't tried installing Ubuntu 20.04 though, as some
report the mic doesn't work once installed.

After rebooting the system, I'm running this version.
You will be happy to learn that pulseaudio doesn't crash with this
version, and it shows so

I can confirm that this issue is still present in
1:6.0.7-0ubuntu0.18.04.10.
the command
$ sudo apparmor_parser -R
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.libreoffice.program.*
still works though.

Obviously this is an upstream bug reported to gnome / mutter developers
a while ago. As usual, they responded by being arrogant and refusing to
acknowledge the problem. We will have to wait for them to open their
eyes.

OK, that's bug #1873630.
We don't actually know that this current crasher bug is correctly solved
by the above patch, since pulseaudio is not yet working. Perhaps the
new bug was there all along, but perhaps it was introduced by this patch
being an incomplete fix.

I have a Gigabyte motherboard that gives pulseaudio fits in Ubuntu 20.04
beta. (It worked fine in 18.04.4 LTS.) It produced pulseaudio crashes
with bug #1870833 until a proposed fix was brought in from upstream:

When I open a session, the mouse cursor moves at the bottom-right of the
screen, at a fixed position. The coordinates are about (x:1730, y:970)
on a 1920x1080 screen.
