At some point polkitd starts to consume CPU power and nothing helps to
make it eat less - only a reboot. This causes laptop to overheat and
coolers spin like crazy.

The Power Off option in that drop down **is** the 'interactive'
gsettings setting. I believe that is an intentional decision by the
gnome-control-center maintainers to use that for Power Off.
