It is very confusing that the gnome-sound-applet is not part of the
"GNOME classic" experience. It has much the look and feel of GNOME 2.x
-- except the sound applet is gone. Why? If nm-applet was taken away,

applet was unresponsive _did_ correctly update the applet state, so it

As a test I left my computer connected to both wired _and_ wireless, and
that also repro'ed the bug after 1 day.
Update Manager was open with 4 updates, but it was working properly, so

issue, I don't have a keyboard plugged into my system, I only use VNC to

it seems to happen as soon as I disconnect the VNC connection. I am
able to kill -9 the
SIGKILL to nm-applet's pid followed by starting nm-applet again brings
it up with the full set of drop-down menu items.

The description is incomplete/misleading; in my case at least the bug
was that re-unmuting sound effects after muting them had no effect.
After poking with it a bit, I think I just isolated it: it only happens
when instead of unckecking the "Mute" checkbox on "Alert volume" you
reset the slider an

It's not possible for gnome-screensaver to intercept the key combination

Admitting it a duplicate. But maybe it would be easier to forbid sysrq
in gnome-screensaver (if technical possible) than change the system
globally. Would reduce the implications of the bug tremendously.
