I experience the same behavior, both after upgrading from 11.04, and
with a clean install of 11.10. I'm using a Sager NP2096. If I click on

I can confirm that this is not restricted to gnome.
I'm running Kubuntu Oneric on a Dell D630 and have the exact same
problem (screen brightness is minimum after display is switched on
again). This is the case in KDE and KDM. I also installed ubuntu-desktop
and observed the same behavior with

Workaround is to delete Banshee's configuration: "gconftool-2 --recursive-unset
/apps/banshee-1"
It would be nice to get a dump of it first, though: "gconftool-2 --dump
/apps/banshee-1"
