I have no idea if I have filed this against the right package. It
happens in both Firefox and Chrome, whatever provides their file
selection dialog for uploads is apparently the problem, I don't know if
that's gnome shell or something else.

Evolution now downloads email from yahoo:993.
I had to deselect 'Pre-released updates' from the developer options in

Not sure if it's helpful but here's another crash from today.
Pretty sure network-manager crashed which has happened before, as i
lost connection to my SSH'd devices and could not connect back to my AP.
Complete freeze happened promptly after. This happened after using a
usb-hub switch.

To clarify the gstreamer fix should be sufficient. The pipewire always-
copy change I made allows for working around the bug but isn't required
as long as you have the gstreamer fix.

I too have this evolution migration problem. I backed up my settings on
a Fedora 8 x86_32 paltform and performed a bare metal install of Ubuntu
Intrepid 8.10 x86_64 on the same hardware. Started evolution, started a
restore from the backup, and it did the silent fail scenario.

3d; I was referring to people who use remote software which have not yet
implemented these features in their xserver (nx 3.5, x2go, etc.)
including llvmpipe.

I didn't change the xserver, I'm using a remote connection which uses
it's own local xserver. For example, I run x2go, which runs a scaled-
back ximing xserver *locally*, however all this means is that all x
information is forwarded to this local xserver. I don't have to install
gnome, unity, etc
I concur. At least make this optional/switchable. It is a feature I do
not wish to use. I like typing a few letters and jumping to a section
in the list.

My normal use includes running Google Chrome, Eclipse PDT, terminal,
CXOffice, Spotify/Last.fm, Pidgin, Gedit. I cannot pinpoint a particular
action I'm taking that causes it, I just notice that my laptop fan is
going crazy, I check the process list and gnome-settings-daemon is up
there using 100%.
It's just happened again.
I ran strace on it and it seems like it's in a loop doing this:

After doing the command "ps -aux" I can see that gnome-panel is using
56% of %MEM. This is reflected by the fact that it takes about 10-15
seconds to open a terminal window (click on shortcut to prompt being
ready) and long times to open other apps as well.

Thanks for you suggestion WeatherGod - I tried it, but alas it makes no
difference.
Something I perhaps should have added in my initial report, is that when
I plug my headphones in, I do get sound through my laptop's speakers.
