I have a IPod Touch 8GB, model, MB528LL, version 3.1.3 7E18) and I have
the same problem. Ubuntu sees it as a device containing pictures and
music, but Rhythmbox does see it. This is with Ubuntu 10.04 final.
I get his from Rhythmbox too:
Device 0 (VID=05ac and PID=1293) is UNKNOWN.

I just started gconf-editor, went to apps, rhythmbox, plugins, ipod and
saw it was not active. I activated and restarted rhythmbox and my iPod
seems to work now.

When I tried to open the a PDF-file, I get this error:
Unable to open document
Failed to read the document catalog
I wasn't able to to read it with Gimp or Inkspace either. But I was able
to read it just fine with Adobe Reader 8 (version 8.1.3).

I have the same problem in Hardy Beta. I can't play any avi or mpeg movie (it
has worked before).
In /var/log/messages I get this:
