I have a IPod Touch 8GB, model, MB528LL, version 3.1.3 7E18) and I have the same problem. Ubuntu sees it as a device containing pictures and music, but Rhythmbox does see it. This is with Ubuntu 10.04 final.
I get his from Rhythmbox too: Device 0 (VID=05ac and PID=1293) is UNKNOWN.
