Many thanks for the video - that helped a lot! gthumb is actually doing what it
is supposed to do. Under "Aspect ratio"/"Ratio d'aspect' the ratio of length to
width is fixed to the value of the picture (390:459 in your example) - the
check box under it just inverses the ratio (to 459:390).
Just to be sure, though : gthumb --version is showing "GNOME gthumb 2.10.11",
right? (You seem to have a non-standard setup, just want to make sure you are
using the version from the repository).
Another question: Does it also hang if you call gthumb --import-photos
*without* having any camera,

Another thing regarding Sebastien's comment: I get an "not sufficient
permissions" error messages when trying to save the file as user2 if the
_directory_ containing the file is not writeable for user2. It seems that gedit
tries to create a new file that then has the logged in user as its owner.
The handling of the "Other..." location seems to be kind of broken: If I enter
"/tmp" (like the OP), the archive is created in the current folder. If I go to
"file system" and double click on tmp (i.e. change into the directory), the
archive is correctly created in /tmp. If I go to "file system"
