I have run into it with Ubuntu 18.04.1 x64 also. I have a completely
separate drive and Windows system in the same computer and Windows, dare
I say it, has no problem and is quick. My data files that fail are
400-500MB and they freeze after about 200MB of transfer when copy from a
32GB SanDisk Ul
I had already reported this for transparent background in gedit and in
some windows on other programs (gramps), but I noticed that Calculator
is also showing the transparent background and that led me to this bug.
This bug is broader than Calculator by far including system monitor.

Transparent background of calcul
I want to add further comment. I am not sure I have the authority to change
the status from invalid to confirmed but it is clear several people are
affected by this and this bug is also reported elsewhere where the transparent
background is affecting gedit/text editor and system monitor. This
