I have run into it with Ubuntu 18.04.1 x64 also. I have a completely separate drive and Windows system in the same computer and Windows, dare I say it, has no problem and is quick. My data files that fail are 400-500MB and they freeze after about 200MB of transfer when copy from a 32GB SanDisk Ultra (80MB/s) SD card. But success with Windows tells me I don't have a hardware problem.
