I was unclear in my last comment. Lucid is affected by this bug, but the
fix is not in the SRU for 2.5.1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1. I verified that

While the above fix keeps unity from crashing, the underlying issue with
evolution is still present. I can use the reproducer in this bug to
freeze evolution and hang the desktop now (ie, I can't click or do
anything until evolution is killed). Evolution turns gray, but doesn't
die. The CPU is not
As this is the sort of master bug, bug #713135 and bug #713172 describe
different issues with the new pygobject (in hamster-applet and meld).

needed /etc/apsswd and /etc/nsswitch.conf, so the nameservice abstraction was
added. This seems rather silly, so I strace'd it:

I see this as well every few days on a laptop I administer. The
workaround from Planet Ubuntu has to be used to get things working
again. I am going to mark this Confirmed since the reporter provided the
screenshots and the Planet Ubuntu article at
http://en.andregondim.eti.br/?p=160 describes and
I'm told that this may be a duplicate of bug #439448. If people can
check and report if it is a duplicate, that would be great. Help in the
other bug would be greatly appreciated.
