using the gtk oxygen theme.

I hate to break the bad news to you - but (at least in Intrepid), that's
NOT true.
I set my screen resolution/refresh rate to something higher than my
monitor could display - and I got a blank screen. I had to actually
*KILL POWER* to get the beast to reboot, and when I booted into recover

I experienced the exact same issue, and (not finding THIS bug), wrote it
up yet again.
Essentially my steps to reproduce involved selecting an invalid display
resolution and accepting it.

I found the cause of the annoyance. For some reason, the virtual
keyboard (Onboard) is automatically set, probably by gnome-accesibility,
to show up when the screen is locked. Launching Onboard Settings and
unchecking "Show Onboard when unlocking the screen" obviously stops this
behavior.
