Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-panel
When I login, the bottom panel is automatically hidden. When I click
(anywhere), the panel is restored. Then when I try changing workspace
(by clicking in the switcher), the desktop crashes and I'm left with
just the desktop background.

than before. What am I doing wrong?
CONCURRENCY=none seems to have fixed the problem here.

I'm not sure if it is actually crashing or not and haven't yet installed
those other packages you describe, but I recorded a short video that
trys to explain it abit better.
I loaded Pidgin because clicking in a Guifications pop-up is the only
way I've found to return back to the original desktop.
Okay, so the workspace "bug" doesn't seem to be a bug after all.
I was experiencing that because of how Compiz handles workspaces
differently. "make sure you have only 1 workspace set in gnome which
will give you 4 viewports "default" in beryl"
