I'm not sure if it is actually crashing or not and haven't yet installed those other packages you describe, but I recorded a short video that trys to explain it abit better.
I loaded Pidgin because clicking in a Guifications pop-up is the only way I've found to return back to the original desktop. So I opened a IRC channel, waited for the pop-up and then changed workspace.
