If I run
sudo sysctl -w kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=0
thumbnails do appear again, under two possible scenarios: logging
out/in, and changing the file name.
We're coming up on a year since this was first reported.

Well, it's been a full month since my last question, prompted by
instructions I received in response to an even earlier comment. I've
received no response so far.
We're also two weeks away from this bug's first anniversary.
It's extremely frustrating, and, to add insult to injury, its status for

To my surprise, I am indeed using Desktop Icons NG (DING). I have no
idea when I installed it, or why. This Ubuntu installation is probably
five years old; I've only upgraded over the years. If I disable the
extension, all my Desktop icons disappear.
