default reasonable - if a user does not currently access the screen,

I had a quick look at the pactl list output and noticed the following
things:
1) You seem to be running the cinnamon desktop. This usually shouldn't
matter; but in this case actually it can. So I'm wondering if this is
also reproducible from a clean Live-CD of, well, saucy/trusty at this

sound settings, worked as usual, and profile was selectable. So at least
the problem is not *that* generic.

(It won't give you any "Off" profiles, but the rest of the profiles
should be selectable)

work with me - and have the time necessary to run tests etc - feel free

happened. Did it disappear on both input and output tabs? If it's still
around on the other tab, maybe you can use that tab to work around the
bug and switch profile there.

So yes, it should definitiely in 3.5 based kernels. It must be something
different. Could you start output that is broken (i e to both HDMI and
speakers),
I can replicate this under both 12.04 and 12.10.

@Guy Taylor, as a workaround you can use the "pavucontrol" application,
available in the repositories as the "pavucontrol" package.
@Seb128, looking from the stack trace, it does not look like
PulseAudio's client API is involved in the infinite recursion. I'm
marking this as invalid for PulseAudio
I meant to change all user visible occurrences of IEC958 to S/PDIF as
the latter would be a more well known / user friendly name for end
users.
Sorry if I missed some spot, but as we're way past string freeze, I
doubt there is anything we can do about it now?
