Selecting any of the folders in the "Places" Menu of the Gnome panel has
no effect. Selecting "Computer" in Places brings up the file browser
with Location computer:///, but all else fails ("Home Folder",

I think I have a similar problem with all applications: they don't
maximize to the full screen, only to a part of the screen. Occasionally
(OK, frequently), they resize themselves, either they snap to the real
fullscreen, or they snap back from the fullscreen to the partial
fullscreen.
