If I run
sudo sysctl -w kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=0
thumbnails do appear again, under two possible scenarios: logging
out/in, and changing the file name.

When the display is resized away from 1280x800 (by resizing the screen
with "Auto Resize" enabled in the Ubuntu packaged virt-viewer
