I got it to work by killing every process regarding empathy (mission-
control, telepathy-*,empathy*), launching empathy-auth-client from the
console and then launch empathy.

This happens to me when I load Google-Chrome. Once it loads, it asks me
for my password to unlock the keyring, the it's off to the races!
It doesn't seem to ever stop using 100% CPU (on my 3.4GHz Pentium D).
If I kill it, everything seems fine.

I can confirm that setting the key image-gallery-resizable to false
stops the problem on my system. So that seems to be the track to
follow.

That's a very intersting observation, Mark. Thanks! I'll keep an eye on
that, i.e. check if I can jump to another TTY before I shutdown.
On my laptop (Lenovo X220) I have noticed that the indicator lights
(LEDs) for wifi and power(!) turn off, while the screen stays on. Marks
observation plus this

We could easily install an autostart file with empathy, disabled by
default. This would make it show up in Startup Applications, and can
easily be enabled. Or we could patch empathy's preferences to add a
checkbox for autostart.

By the way, "Automatically connect on startup" isn't the same as
starting on login. That is a setting for connecting when empathy
starts.
