able to use the computer for about 30 seconds after being away from the
computer for 20 minutes.

On Lucid (and probably earlier versions), you can disable the alt+print
keyboard shortcut in system->preferences->keyboard shortcuts seems to do
the trick. You could probably change it to ctrl+print or something, but
I didn't bother since I don't use that feature enough to care. Cheers

and the error messages went away. It appears to be filling the file with
stuff, but I'm not a Linux guru so there might be a reason my hand

I've had to use Konsole to continue using Alt keys, which I use heavily
in irssi. Upgrading to Natty is not really a consideration at this time.
